Approximately 25 Bozeman-area Special Olympics athletes took part in "Healthy Habits-A Slam Dunk", an October 1st basketball clinic led by NBA Legend and Project WET Foundation Board of Directors member Harvey Catchings. Montana State University Bobcats Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Aerick Sanders and several MSU Bobcats players assisted Catchings in leading the athletes through basketball skill drills, scrimmages and small group coaching. In addition to improving their basketball skills, participants also learned about the importance of drinking water while on the basketball court.
Project WET Senior Vice President John Etgen led the group in a Project WET healthy hydration activity during a break in the hoops action.
A wide array of photos of the event can be seen on Flickr.
Project WET's longstanding relationship with Reach Inc., a Bozeman nonprofit focusing on empowering adults with intellectual disabilities, helped inspire the event. Several of the Reach clients who clean the Project WET offices are avid basketball players and fans. The event also recognizes a partnership between Project WET and the National Basketball Retired Players Association - Houston Chapter (NBRPA). Project WET and the NBRPA are working together to promote urban water education, healthy habits around hydration and STEM education and career mentoring.
