Bozeman, Montana—As part of his trip to Montana to join the Project WET Foundation's Board of Directors, retired NBA legend Harvey Catchings will lead "Healthy Habits-A Slam Dunk", a clinic for Special Olympics basketball players in the Gallatin Valley. Montana State University Bobcats Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Aerick Sanders and several MSU Bobcats players will join Catchings at the October 1st event, which will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Ridge Athletic Club.
In addition to honing their basketball skills, athletes at the clinic will also learn about the importance of healthy hydration and water in general by participating in Project WET water education activities.
"This clinic is a chance for Project WET to share the talents of its Board of Directors with our local community," Project WET President and CEO Dennis Nelson said. "We are excited that Harvey will be working with Special Olympics athletes in Bozeman."
Catchings played with the Philadelphia 76ers, the New Jersey Nets, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Clippers, racking up 2,335 points and 3,639 rebounds during his 1974-1985 NBA career. His 1,226 career blocks rank him among the top NBA shot blockers of all time. Today, Catchings is a Houston businessman and father of five children, including WNBA and Olympic women's basketball star Tamika Catchings.
Project WET's longstanding relationship with Reach Inc., a Bozeman nonprofit focusing on empowering adults with intellectual disabilities, helped inspire the event. Several of the Reach clients who clean the Project WET offices are avid basketball players and fans. The event also recognizes a new partnership between Project WET and the National Basketball Retired Players Association - Houston Chapter (NBRPA). Project WET and the NBRPA are working together to promote urban water education, healthy habits around hydration and STEM education and career mentoring.
