Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education in Kiswahili

Project WET’s successful water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) materials, published with funding from the United States Agency for International Development, for sub-Saharan African nations have been well-received and widely successful in raising awareness of African children’s awareness of the importance of water and health.

The original materials, published in June 2008 and distributed to 1,000 schools in 16 sub-Saharan countries, were created in English and French. The goal is to develop the materials in multiple languages to meet individual country and district needs; for example in Kiswahili for Tanzanian and Kenyan schools.

A group of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are partnered with government agencies from Tanzania approached Project WET seeking a Kiswahili translation and printing for their schools. The NGOs include the Tanzania Water and Sanitation Network (TaWaSa.Net) and the Iringa Development of Youth, Disabled and Children Care (IDYDC). They plan to:

  • extend their health education program for children.
  • increase their education offerings.
  • promote peer-to-peer education on these key water and health topics.

Deliverables

  • Translate existing WASH education materials into Kiswahili for African children.
  • Design and lay out translated materials for printing.
  • Print copies for Tanzanian and Kenyan students.
